Last week I had the pleasure in participating in a survey conducted by Tom Oser, Ph.D. of Oser & Company. Tom's firm specializes in "Strategy and Execution through Development of High-Performance Behaviors". Tom was conducting the survey interviews as background information for a December 7th 2006 panel discussion session at New York Institute of Technology. The topic is “Current Issues for Career Management and Directions for IT Executives”. The survey was seeking points of view on what it takes today to reach and successfully lead in the top technical positions in the CIO’s organization in corporations.
The role of “CIO” is strategic and evolving. It is more about business than technology. While a target role for some technologists, the role of CIO more and more takes professional development and mindset of general business. Technical track people are now frequently competing with line of business executives for the leadership roles.
Our panel of experts comment upon and lead discussion on:
- The imperative of bridging the gap between IT and business
- Replacing “Life long employment with a single corporation” with “Life-long Learning” as a career strategy
- What it takes today to be a top IT Executive within the CIO’s organization, and in the wider context of general business.
It was really quite an interesting discussion based on the questions and some of the responses he mentioned from the other participants.
Tom has promised to share the results with me after the panel discussion and I hope to the be able to share them with you through the blog. Better yet, if your going to be in New York on December 7th why not attend?
Stay tuned!
